I had the same problem with my 98 sport se atx.
It did the exact same thing you described. I took it into my dealership where i work (ford). My problem was a shorted main wire harness. 2 broken motor mounts. But the main problem was the bad shift solenoid pack. I had it covered under warranty with a $500 deductible. I would get it scanned at autozone or somewhere for free. trouble code will be P1741,P1742,P1743 for torque converter clutch solenoid malfunction if this is your problem. post the code here we will try and help.
