The MAF is on the top of the air intake assembly has a plug going into it. Also, it should be in a metal housing. It has some security type screws which require a special keyed like wrench to remove it. I wouldn't remove it. The sensor with the glass LED looking thing is not the MAF. I was able to remove the plug and then remove loosen the clamps. The entire housing comes off with the MAF safely attached. Look inside the housing and you should see one or two very then metal elements. They may appear black (dirty). Spray them with carb cleaner (don't touch them with anything; just use the spray) keep spraying until nice and shiny, allow to dry, then re-install. If the elements look broken, you may have to purchase a MAF. I just found out about this www.fordpartsonline.com site and they seem to have very good deals on parts. That diry MAF causes soo much trouble, that I will clean it once a quarter for preventative maintenance.

Also, if you don't already have one, purchase the haynes repair manual for your year contour. Cost about $15 and worth every penny.

Good Luck.

Let me know how it went.

I was just thinking that maybe for your year model that glass LED thing could be your MAF. I'm not sure for your year. I have read that the MAF was redesigned and I don't know what the new design looks like. Make sure you indeed have a dirty MAF, as this entire conversation may be mute for your year contour. Your symptoms due sound like a dirty MAF, but like anything, it could be a number of things. If you had a check engine light on, then it would easier to view the codes for the error. I'm sure its due to low fuel intake (lean situation).

Sorry for any confusion.

Andre

Thanks! I popped open the air filter housing today, and (after cleaning out some bugs and dirt that had collected below Mr. K&N, I looked at the MAF, the little post with the two metal peices is there in the center, however I could not tell if it was dirty since it was so far back, I went to Wal-Mart tonight and got a good set of socket wrenches, I think this should let me separate the section that houses the MAF and connects to that rubber tube. I'll buy throttle body cleaner, (this is very close to carb cleaner right?) and clean the area past the butterfly while I'm at it. The problem has gotten worse the car bogs and hesitates SO bad, and it's incredible how fast it's gotten this way! I cannot wait for morning, I pray this fixes it, don't want to plow into that $200 deductible on my Ford Premium Care frown frown

Ok, I cleaned my MAF, (it looked pretty clean already, but I can tell a difference, I also cleaned the throttle body and whatever part of the upper air intake I could by spraying the cleaner down the chute. (accidently inhaled some of that stuff, my nose burns like hell!) Anyways I started my car up a couple times during that process (hard to keep it running with all that gunk getting burned) and I used roughly half the container. It ran SO quiet afterwards and throttle response was much better! However, the problem was still reproducable, though not NEARLY as often, it was harder to get the car to do it. I also took my car out to the university's parking lot and did some full throttle tight turns and such, so it seems that the problem isn't related to the turning process wink It's more once you straighten and floor it going from a certain speed. Like I said before i changed the fuel filter about 8,000 miles ago, should I do this again? Or should I just get the original thing, the fuel pressure, checked? Thanks again!
