Actually, Detroit is pretty well set up for street navigation. Since they are a newer city (relative to us East Coasters), all the major roads in the area are planned as a big (and I mean HUGE) grid.
Major E-W roads are one mile apart and are "Mile Roads". 8 Mile Rd. is the north border of Detroit - south of that is hell. It's actually quite easy to figure out how far apart things are. I'm not sure how far down the miles go, but you can get as high as mid-20s as you go north.
The major N-S roads are named roads and usually named after people or places. Still generally set up as one mile apart.
I found navigating all but extreme downtown Detroit to be quite easy even if unfamiliar. Now, if they would just get rid of the "Michigan lefts" - to turn left, go past the road you want to turn on, make a U-turn about 100 feet up, then turn right at the desired road. Now THAT is stupid! Even the NJ jughandles and standard "NJ lefts" are better.
But then again, there isn't much about Detroit that isn't retarted, in any case.

What is so different from this, than DC's A St, B St., C. St, or 7th st, 8th st. Not much different. As Jason said, it is nice so that out of towners (like yourself) know where you are going. After 14 mile the streets get named, Lincoln, Coolidge, etc. Woodward runs right through all of them straight into downtown (ugh).

Hey I saw 2 SVT's today, I saw a blue one, for the first time, it was this mornin in the HOV lane on 270 south passing exit 4 montrose road.
then i saw that red SVT again in gaithersburg today.
any word on that blue one?
