On the LIM/UIM rebuild what benefits will I get? Lost performance over the years? Better fuel ecomony than I'm getting now. Someone help me out and tell me what it will do!!

I have a 1998 Contour SE, with 72K and it has the Duratech.

Thanks in advance!

When you dismantle the UIM/LIM, you'll be amazed at the build-up of carbon and gunk inside. This has a net effect of narowing your air passages...causing turbulent flow...and restricting the amount of air going into the engine. By removing it all, you'll be restoring your engine to "like new" performance..kinda like when you change your plugs out.

Now if you go the extra step and match your UIM to your LIM by gasket matching and removing any material, and then optimizing your TB while its all off as well, then you'll actually gain HP. Heck...optimize your LIM...get more.

how do you do all of that? with the LIM, isnt the LIM a pain, im thinking just doing the UIM. optimizing and all? we are cleaning the TB also.

The LIM is a little work to get off (fuel rail and wiring harness) but takes less than an hour to get off. The LIM butterflies will be caked with stuff...I think that's where I spent most of my time, as the UIM, you can only reach so far inside. There's a how to on the TB optimizing...the concept is the same for the LIM, though getting the butterflies and rods out of the LIM is something I don't know how.

I guess just take it as it comes. If you take the UIM off and the LIM looks o-k...don't worry about it. But my feeling is that when you see it...you'll want to remove it.

mcgainer, please see my post in the duratec performance section titled "Secondaries"
Also, how does one "gasket match" the UIM to the LIM. Is that just making sure the ports match up? Please excuse my ignorance.

The parts #s in the How-to are for a 95 I believe. Go the the Ford Stealership, and get UIM/LIM, TB, AIC gaskets, and a new EGR valve. My injector O-rings were fine.

The UIM just sits on the LIM...so I would def get new gaskets (and use the proper tq sequence). The whole job took me 8 hours...but I was real methodical. Like I said, 1/2 the time was spent cleaning the LIM of carbon.

Not ignorant at all. And exactly right. Put your gaskets on the UIM...see if the gaskets cover any of the port, or if the ports are centered in the gasket holes. If either is off...grind/file/dremel the difference until it all lines up. The take that gasket and plop onto top of LIM...and match it up the same. ONLY do this to the LIM if its off the engine (I know...duh, but just to be safe). You're not gonna see 12 sec qtr times from all this, but you will get a sytem operating at its peak, and if the castings were off, you can pick up some good hp/tq.

Most of the big # guys on here look at and optimze almost everything that they bolt on their cars, from headers to MAF adapters to TBs. A little attention to deatil can really pay off...

I was thinking about taking off the UIM and painting it... and cleaning it out as well.. can I take it off.. clean it all out and then just bolt it right back on without changing any parts?
