Yes, the standard hardware version hooks up with a serial cable. I believe that he also has a USB hookup as well.
Mine hooks up via the serial port to my desktop computer. I then have a 50-foot cable that goes out my second-story window and hooks up to the car. 
As said above, I have gotten a lot of great use out of Alex's Vehicle Explorer. I have read (and fixed) two separate CELs for my car, and have helped my neighbor and a friend read their CEL codes as well.
I have also borrowed a friends laptop computer and recorded real-time data while taking my car for a "joy ride".
