CD4E Case Parts That should give you a decent idea. If not, go outside and look under your battery. See that black pan, well if you were to remove that pan you would expose the valve body.
Yes it can be removed from the car without yanking the tranny... I am not sure of all the steps, but I know that you would have to remove/relocate the A/C Accumulater, battery, battery holder and the radiator. That should give enough room to pull the pan out enough to get it out.
