Sounds like the infamous "lawnmower syndrome" that Volvos often do, and which I experienced myself a couple of days ago doing what your husband did. IIRC the initial rich mix for cold start, run a couple of times for very short time periods (such as pulling the car out and then back in to get to the lawnmower), can cause the motor to flood and not want to start. Next time (1) let it run a couple of minutes when it's started (rather than just pull it up run it around the block) and (2) try holding the accelerator to the floor and starting it. I don't know about the knocking though.
