The thing that sticks out the most for me in regards to Eminem is his lyrics. His rhymes don't all end in "ya." He actually puts SENTENCES together that rhyme--that's talent. Sure he's a twirp..but most stars ARE twirps in some way or another.
As for him winning the Oscar..that song FIT THE MOVIE! It was dead on. THAT'S why it won, not because it is popular. But someone else already covered that topic. It's sort of a shock that Eminem won an Oscar, but it was well deserved.

i agree with this statement. but his maturity has grown quite a bit from his first cd to the second. he now thinks before he speaks, and when he does say something that is taken the wrong way...he means it...and its his personal opinion, freedom of speech. i think he has matured into a really good rapper with incredible lyrics and matured a lot more as a human being himself. one of the few artists that i can put in a cd of his and listen to the whole thing without skipping at track...the other being dr dre, coincidence...i think not.....oh and any other rap fans out there who want to here mind boggling lyricsl, listen to this song Binary Star - Reality Check

M&M has come a long way from the first CD's repeating lyrics. The actual story telling of the second album carries the songs a lot further into POP radio than most rap albums ever go. As for questioning the subject matter... How many of you grew up not in just disagreement with your parents, but actual physical battles with them? How many abuse alcohol and perscription drugs while they beat the crap out of you? Ever had a spouse do the same? It's easy to say what you would do when you've never had to deal with the same situation. Just for my information, is there any song he has that he actually talks about hitting women, or actually shooting them? From what I've heard, it's all about what he wanted to do, then found better ways to deal with the situation, then talks about it through his music. It's almost therapy.

I agree.
I could care less who he is in real life, but his lyrics are amazing and that's one of things I look at.
Not to mention that he's a marketing genius.

I would have to agree with you two here... he does do amazing things with words that nobody else does... and who really cares avout his life or life style he lives... just like alot of people hated rodman but as a basketball palyer he was great but an odd ball off the court. nobody could rebound like him or get in side another players head like he could and that all help the team he was playing for to win.

Hah, that makes no sense. For lack of a better analogy. That's like saying, "Oh Jeffrey Dahmer is SOO smart and SO nice! Who CARES that he's a cannibal!" You can't just overlook people's personalities, etc. Most psychos are the smartest or most genius. Whoopdy doo. So he's a great lyricist. So be it. But that guy has to have some kinda of mental inbalance.

is the award for he music or for the kind of person he is?
I thought it was for the music...
I guess people like Jimmy Hendrex, Janace Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Kobain, all are crap when it comes to being an artist because they al died at age 27 due to things they did in their personal life. lets see here we have OD, OD, OD, and a suicide. does that take away from what they did with their music I think not. what award was Jeffery Dahmer nominated for? nothing.... I wonder why he wasn't nominated for anything and last I check eminem is up for his music not her personality.

While I question even remotely relating Emimem to Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Jim Morrison, or Kurt Cobain- the fact does stand that he is indeed being recognized for his music, which I completely agree with. I personally can't stand his music, but I can acknowledge his creativity. Sure he's a bit of a nutcase, but in a way, so are a majority of the musicians in the industry. If he wasn't a nutcase, he'd have nothing to rap about. I wouldn't miss him, but he seems to be pretty popular.
Music awards really don't mean anything to me anyway. Most of the music I like would never sniff some pompous self-involved industry award show. There's countless bad songs and musicians that have won awards, oh well.

Don't forget that Cobain's death was related to drugs. That's what I'm saying though. The fact that his music is creative and whatnot, is fine, he can win awards for that all he wants. Then let's leave it at that. Who DOES care that he had a hard time growing up, good for him, I'm glad he made it. But I thought this was all about the music? Not his personal life. Despite whether or not I like any of those artist's music that you listed above, I don't respect a damned one, either because of their behavior or their personality, etc. Yes, this is a different subject than music, obviously. I'm making reference to those who were so hell-bent on mentioning his rough time growing up, rather than his actual music, despite the fact that some of his music had to do with it. They are indeed 2 different things.

So, rap had something to do with his rough time growing up... Boy, that doesn't sound like a stereotype . Remember kids: "Rap makes your life rough..." Ptfffff... Please.
