It uses the fuel running through it to cool it. Starving it for fuel both cavatates the pump and causes it to overheat.
The low fuel idiot light is just that. It tells you that you have been an idiot and have run the car too low on fuel. (yes we've all done it  )
Any time you do this you run the risk of damaging the fuel pump by starving it for fuel.
You know what...I've had the Shark since 99...and I've never gotten the Low Fuel light to come on...and I've tried!!! Hmmmmm....
