It was a question...something I read...Dependence on foreign sources - US reserves of crude oil in Alaska, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific. The known quantities of crude in the areas we've chosen not to extract are tremendous (22.4 billion barrels of proved reserves, 2001). These could supply our needs for decades.

If it is proved it exists it is considered a reserve. It might already be on the very first table I posted. (I am not saying that it is already there).
Now assuming the value was no computed on the USA reserve tables that would increase it by 50%:
55 billion + 25 billion
That's a good question. I am not sure if the 2001 tables I have already include those reserves.
But you can verify that the Middle East having about 650 billion barrels is going to monopolize the market no matter how many Alaskas we find around the world.
That's the issue here. Alaska could be a temporary relief, but it would not even be able to retain prices (depending on the demand) because if the demand continues to grow the main producer (in the future, OPECs) will tell us the price.

If the Middle East is democritized, the price of oil will likely go up. Won't it?

If the USA "put a democracy" overthere and let "USA companies" "invest" in oil companies and so on the price would be the market price.
Now, lets leave the maniac in control. 20 years from now they are aware that the energy flowing in the USA is coming from them. what would impede them to boycoting or bumping up prices ??? nothing. Remember 1979 ??
In an open democratic market that wouldn't happen, because the companies would be publics, meaning that outside investors could (and indeed would) own them.
why do u think we would love to see Venezuela Oil company (the goverment owns it) being put out on the market ?? We know USA investors would by it and keep the thing running smooth...

Uhhh...
Dude, check your facts before you go spouting this kinda BS.
The US only gets around 6% or its oil from Iraq AND when the war is over, it will be the UN that takes posession of the oil.
This isn't about Western imperialism. It's about protecting the United States of America from a direct threat (Saddam Hussein) first, liberating the Iraqi people from a tyrannical dictator second, and stabilizing the entire Middle Eastern region.
Grow up.

I totaly agree with this statement, well not all of it, but i personaly do not believe that is the case...50% of our oil come from the USA, 30% from south america 17% from europe and only 3% from the middle east.
So i don;t see how it can be a war for oil. I know Saddam is a tyrant and i believe he needs to go. Weather war is the answer or not is the only thing i am sceptical on...but either way we need to support or troops over seas, and wee need to support the prsident.... I personally believe in freedom of speach and i understand what all the anit war protestors are saying, but when does that right become un american??? and when does speach turn into treason????
I hear a local radio station (Wild 94.9) talk show talking shi* about bush and war. Some of the stuff they say can be extremly contraversal but true...but most of the time it seems like they are just promoting hate of our president and country, which to me is wrong! Its too bad our country allows hate to be preached becasue of the 5th amendment...though i love our great constitution, i feel is should be amended to deny hate a voice.
Again I say I feel war may not be the answer to this....but neither is hate of our country and president...I even hear people who call them selves americans talking about our men and women over seas, in a demeaning and derogitory way.
Regardless of what pepople think is happening, i personally feel you don;t use hate to get your anti war statements across. Some one once said "Hate fans the flames of war....." and i still believe that be true now.

With that in mind I fear retalition on US and its interest could be inevitable. I hope this thought is wrong. Either way I hope no one loses a life or a loved one from this.
Do you really think American soil will be any safer if we just stand back and let Saddam continue to "lead" his country? Retaliation is going to be a problem for a long time. This war doesn't change that. Much like the last one, it will be over son. His troops don't want ot fight for him...they will surrender like the last time. In fact, some already have.

That guy makes Saddam Hussien(sp?, plus who the F cares) look like a tooth fairy! N. Korea is the one with Nuke capabilities.
It will be atleast a year before North Korea has enough plutonium to manufacture a bomb...using their nuclear reactors as a source for it.

As far as oil goes...we probably wouldn't even need Middle east oil at all....except the seal huggers won't let us drill in the Arctic...or is it alaska? We are doing the Iraqi people a giant favor. Once they won't be murdered for talking out against saddam, you'll all realise.
