your needle may be off and you have less gas than it indicates
the gas isn't getting pumped through when nailing it up to 5Krpm....causing your sputtering.
Try the filter, however, it may be something else.
Also - don't let your gas tank go down too too far down to E. Not good for the fuel pump & cats.
