My 96 has rust on the bottom edges of all the doors, but the drivers door is the most advanced. I noticed what appeared to be lumps under the paint in the area when the car was still under warranty. I questioned Ford about it and of course they said they would not do anything about it.

Got the same answer from 3 dealers....what BS!!!!!

Yeah, that's the "perforation" warranty-dodge used by just about everybody. Unless you can actually see through the metal, you're hosed. Whomever came up with that one should have negotiated a royalty for every time a car under warranty has a rust claim denied.

Maybe you should take a ratty, chewed-up, old screwdriver and a spray bottle full of dissolved rock-salt and "expedite" the perforation.

Yeah, I can see the slightest bit of it right at the corner of the rubber seal on the bottom of the window - where there is a small gap going down into the door. This makes me wonder if it is growing inside the door also, since it is at the spot where the water both enters and exits the doors.
Has anyone seen that happen before? I plan on sanding the bottom edge of the doors down, sealing and re-primering/painting it, but it would be worthless if it was growing from inside the door ...

BTW, whose ever seen an older Ford car that ISNT all rusted out? I thought Ford had gotten better with their newer cars, but I guess I was wrong.

Well, I guess I'm not the only one then with this issue. I just noticed it the other day getting out of the car.

What can be done for this issue ? I'd have no problem attempting bodywork if that is what is needed.

AH rust, it's everywhere. It's just part of the natural order or whatever you might want to call it. Steel will rust/break down even in a vacuum chamber at zero humidity. So everything that is done to seal/treat/coat or paint is only slowing down the process. With that in mind if you see rust and plan on keep your vehicle don't watch it do something to slow it down.
Now this is where the arguments get flying. I've been trying to find an affordable maintenance method for the last 40+ years. And yes if the manufacture treats and coats the steel right in the first time, then you have a head start.
IE: My 89 Probe sealed/coated and painted on the bottom side and Ziebarted, still after 8-10 years found a small hole in the floor pan. The weak point the spot weld. I've been told the that the high heat of the weld causes a molecular difference that causes, well sort like galvanic action.

If you are fortunate to get around cars buffs that restore/maintain collector type vehicles, They have all sorts of tricks to slow down the process.
But first and foremost don't just watch it, do something!
I've also learned that paint is porous/breaths! If you can find something called "Miracle paint" & another similar product "Por_15", it I believe is a coating that I've been told seals and cures.(like epoxy) This is only for the underneath and out of site areas.
IE I use to work with guy that has it on his vintage car. The battery tray had rust (of course) he wire brushed the loose rust off, bushed on the miracle paint. He knows I'm a skeptic about this easy method, well after 8 years it still looks like new. It's a 60's something Olds drivable show car. BUT don't get the stuff on your hands, it only wears off!

Then there is the interim step during before/during/after (a around to it) winter when I spay, PB Blaster! Like I said, don't watch do something. Or get get some of Rust stopping converting product that the autostores carry.

Hey guys I do not have any rust on my contour yet. I though there would be some rust somewhere, but could not find any.
Not bad for a 96.

Well that's becuase you have a 96. Ford still sealed the door seams during that model year.

I tried sanding it off the back doors and primering it and it came right back. This time I'll try navel jelly, hopefully that will eat ALL of it off and then I can primer/paint it again.

I was going to suggest some nice marine products since I've seen what they can do.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
