Piece of cake to change this thing. I just followed the directions from the 'How To' Article and only took about 20 minutes. I got mine at Advance Auto Parts for $16.88 + tax. I love this web site!!!

It really depends how dirty it is. You'll notice when you turn on heat/air. It needs to be done. Trust me. I wish I had a digital camera to show you what mine looked like. It was like the picture you just posted but no white, all gray/black.

They normally get filthey after a year, the 20,000 mile recommended interval is pushing it a little. Much dirtier then the engine air filter I have found.,

Went to AutoZone last night, looking for the $8 Deutsch cabin filter (#CAF1700). Well, my store no longer has Deutsch oil or air filters on the shelves. Instead they have STP. I couldn't find the filter in the STP brand (the Deutsch part numbers were labeled in small type on the boxes) and the counter guy looked it up.
The Deutsch CAF1700 was $19.99 and had to be ordered (1-2 business days)! Were these really 8 bucks at some point? I should have just bought the Purolator for 16 bucks at Advance Auto Parts when I was there yesterday.

Is CF8046 the correct part number for the Fram filter?

Just buy the Purolator.
Purolator makes the Motorcraft units. So it has the correct alignment tabs. Plus it's a superior filter to FRAM, STP, Deutsch, etc...

In a thread about a year ago, bigjim was explaining how the Fram was actually a quite good filter for this application. Something about some sort of fancy charcoal that would likely keep the filter performing better for a longer time than the stock Motorcraft.
Any thoughts?
