When you are installing LEDs into the gauge cluster and you have to rub off the green coating is there a way to paint it blue? Id like to keep the red markings without having them turn purple when the lights are on.

Recap: Scraping off the green coating on the back of the guage cluster and repainting it blue. That way I can use white LEDs and keep the red markings red.

huh? explain that again? the red markings turn purple? is that because you have blue lights behind the red? so most people are scraping off the red? hm. maybe if instead of repainting it blue, you could put some blue cellophane or blue window tint back there?

wouldnt you still have purple markings though, because whether the light is blue from the bulb or white from the bulb and then filtered blue, you still have blue going through red?

am i missing something?

Blue tint may work. You are on the right track. Im planning on installing white LEDs in the back to avoid discolorization of the red markings.

I hope this clears things up a bit, if not go look at your speedometer, with the lights on you'll see both Green and red markings, what I want to do is make the green markings a blue color and keep the red markings red. If I just install a blue LED in the back the red markings will shine purple and thats NOT what I want. Think VW, both red and blue guage colors at night.

why go through the trouble of installing white LEDs when theres already white bulbs back there? i'd just scrape off the green and put in the blue. anyone have any idea how hot it gets back there? would cellophane melt?

Because if you haven't looked at them before they are tinted yellowish, not a pure white. But a off color yellow. and it looks bad unless you make your guages match. I have yellow guages, and they look great with it shining the "white" bulbs. Painting it would be so much easier, so tape off the area you want to keep then paint the other area, make sure its even.
