Those Canadian dictionaries must be different. Some definitions include:
1. "A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties."
2. "A concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to something considered injurious: the war against acid rain."
3. "To be in a state of hostility or rivalry; contend."
I am sure the Iraqi people will be deeply angered that the US may "invade" their nation and ruthlessly steal their sovereignty.
But you are right, once the US has defeated Iraq militarily, it will be just like the "takeover" of Japan and Germany. We will probably enslave them and start some mass genocide.
