Is this US proposed attack/invasion/takeover of Iraq being called a war by CNN for domestic propaganda purposes or do I misunderstand the current US usage of the term war, e.g., war on drugs?

Those Canadian dictionaries must be different. Some definitions include: 1. "A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties." 2. "A concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to something considered injurious: the war against acid rain." 3. "To be in a state of hostility or rivalry; contend."
I am sure the Iraqi people will be deeply angered that the US may "invade" their nation and ruthlessly steal their sovereignty.
But you are right, once the US has defeated Iraq militarily, it will be just like the "takeover" of Japan and Germany. We will probably enslave them and start some mass genocide.

Okay now, WTF are you talking about? When the U.S freed Japan and Germany there was no genocide of any kind.

Oh no. They will most welcome their liberators, just like the Afghans recently liberated. They, for example are so happy that their newly and democratically elected president has to be protected by the US army from the overhelming love of his own people.
But the boys will return from the Gulf in their unfaded glory after just a couple of decades of peacekeeping. (Or they can choose to return every 12 years, if they don't feel like staying for so long).

Actually they are; I'm using a paperback Canadian English Dictionary that, surprisingly, was printed and bound in the US.

This def'n was not in mine and actually answers my basic question (interesting example your's quotes).
And since you took the subtle bait ...
Quote:

I'm sure they are/will be.

Well actually those are your words, not mine nor believed by me (nor you!).
Thanks for the response.

I'm sure Karzai would gladly call you a fool, as there are elements in his country that don't agree with his rule, not the entire country as you so recklessly allude to. Extremism is a problem in Afghanistan, much like ignorance is among certain circles in the US...
...and the UN would most likely be called in to help with the peacekeeping excercise after any regime change, as the US has stated more than once that they would leave after they considered their job done, which right now would most likely be considered getting Hussein out of Iraq, along with finding and destroying any remaining chem/biochem weapons...

Surely you are not being serious? Have you ever sat down and talked with someone who used/had to live in that country?
