sounds to me like your battery connection isn't up to par. I suggest you clean both battery connections and get them back together tight. the spark you got while removing the cable can't hurt the car but can harm you. That is why it's always recommended to remove the negative cable. Since the negative cable is connected to the car body any contact from your wrench while removing it will not cause a spark. So clean 'em up and you should be good to go.
