Have a 98 2.5 with the ATX.
I can't find anywhere if I should use Mercon III or the newer Mercon V. Can someone tell me if it's been discussed?
I searched and got lots of info on the bucket flushing method and the coctail for the MTX, but not about which fluid to use.

Ford cannot build a car like this (1966 tbird) today because the US government says it is not safe. It has no crumple zones, air bags, or other safety features such as what you'll find in say, a new Toyota. But hit a Toyota with one of these and see who loses!

This doesn't help, but the guy in my auto parts store told me that the new Mobil 1 ATX fluid works in all trannies. I don't believe it though.
I've also been told not to use Mercon V, if the trans takes Mercon III.
I used Penzoil Mercon III.

In some instances ford has recommended upgrading to V (the 4r70w in the RWD cars)... but then they undid their recomendation because it caused seal leaks...
not having any clue, I figured I'd ask here....

The owners manual (and Haynes) specifies Mercon ATF which is supposed to be stamped on the dipstick. Mercon V is an upgraded version of Mercon fluid that can also be used in our ATX: Product Application:
Havoline Automatic Transmission MERCON V is approved against Ford's MERCON V and MERCON service fill specifications and can be used for all Ford transmissions requiring MERCON V or MERCON fluids. It is also approved against the General Motors DEXRON-III and Allison C-4 specifications, and can be used in all applications requiring these fluids...I have used Quaker State 4x4 synthetic fluid for Mercon, Mercon V and Dexron 3 applications on my last 3 changes with good results. In all my vehicles (Camry, Mystique, Isuzu, Chev.) I use synthetic Amsoil ATF which is compatible with Mercon V.
Been using since 30,000 miles in the Mystique. highest mileage car I have using it is at 143,000, swithced at 25,000. No tranny issues as yet.

The ATX calls for regular Mercon, but I don't see how Mercon V would hurt. I use Mobil 1 ATF, which meets Mercon specs.

* Use only MERCONŽ approved transmission/transaxle fluid. Use of any fluid approved and/or labeled
for MERCONŽ V may cause internal transaxle damage.
So, fwiw, I would stick to the recommended (I have a 100,000 mile warranty, so I believe it would void it if I didn't follow the book).

I would stick with the Mercon/Dexron III fluid, like Mobil 1 trans fluid, which is what I use in my 96 SE 2.5L.
Not all Mercon V fluids are also back-specified for regular Mercon.

Thanks for the info. After I thought about it I realized I couldn't add V without a full flush, so I did just go with the regular Mercon/Dexron III stuff.
What I took out was brown and muddy, kinda like opaque coca-cola. This is at 43K miles. I plan to drain the 4 qts in the pan again at the next oil change and evaluate.
The car shifts much better now.
