For most cases, this wouldn't be true. Most aftermarket filters will slip right over the inlet to the maf. All you would need is the metal clamp to tighten it on, which usually is on the filter already.

I'm assuming that since the maf OD is 80mm then a filter wath at ID slighlty less than 3.5" would slip on over fine...right?
