I don't think distance would have a negative effect because most CAIs are longer than short ram intakes. If distance hindered performance than they would probably find another way to get cold air.
On a side note: I had heard that the new cobra has a system that feeds cold air from the air conditioner ducts. True or False?

False. The new SVT Lightning concept has a system called the supercooler, which takes chilled A/C coolant and pumps it into the supercharger's intercooler at WOT, giving it a gain of approx 50 horsepower. It cools intake temps from about 140 degrees to 50 degrees. This burst of coolness lasts about 45 seconds at a time and can recharge in 2 minutes.
The SVT guy John Coletti said its pretty simple and wouldn't be all that hard to put on production cars. He said all it really needs is an extra coolant resevoir and some piping to make it all work.

Well I spose for the first few seconds when you first start the car, but after there is airflow throughout the tube, I would say no.

It's likely your car will run rich for a little bit. I had one that went in to the fender well and went to just behind the fog lamp. I couldn't prove a hp gain on the dyno so I never made any. All it did was richen the air fuel a bit. The zetec on the other hand picked up a bunch and one of these days I'll get them made.

The longer the intake the slower the throttle response and the more heatsoak. (more piping to heat & longer travel)
The longer the piping & the more bends; the more the restriction as well (less efficient - like Chris said it runs rich afterwards for a reason)
Also look at the position of the small filter.
Right in the very hot radiator wash and over & beside the hot engine & transmission.
Those are all reasons I would not recommend a Hot Air Intake setup verses a large conical filter with heatshield in the stock location.

Demon, I am following your recommondation of a large conical K&N filter w/MAF adaptor and heatshield. I was wondering if and/or why conical is superior to cylindrical? Or is a similar sized cylindrical filter the same as conical?

I prefer the tapered cone because it allows for more airflow to the lower portion of the filter.
The wheel well cuts in at a angle and really restricts the filters ability to get airflow if you jam the filter right up against it like a straight round filter would be.
Also it you do not do that you would lose out on filter diameter and/or filter length which exponentially decrease your effective filter area.
So to make my posts short I just say I recommend, "a Large mouth K&N Conical & MAF adapter"

Very nice looking setup, just have to see some dyno results to see if it is worth the touble. Wouldn't it be easy to just run a scoop on the hood over a K&N airfilter with a custom heatshield? It seems like there is no really good place to go for a true CIA.
