I am looking to get 17 x 7.0 rims at 40mm offset. I am trying to decide whether there is much of a performance gain from the 225s over 215s. With the 225s, I know that I am going to have to do some modifications to the wheel wells to make them not rub. Which of the two would provide the best over all performance in handling and traction, because I know that 225 is actually a little big for a 7" rim and 7.5" would be best for the 225? The price for both tire sizes are about the same so that is really not too big of a concern. And another question, if I got the 215s, which sidewall size would be best? 40 or 45? I know that the 40 would reduce the overall diameter, which probably would be good for acceleration in my ATX, but I do also like the idea of the 45s having more rubber to protect my wheels. Ahhh decisions...

225 are not too wide for a 7" rim, I have 225/50 on 16x6.5 rims.
17x7 is just perfect.

I think it might be too wide for an SE on a 17" rim though. I thought there was something with the wheel well liners. I think you'll have some rubbing issues. Im going with 215 on my new 18"s just do I wont have to deal with rubbing.

while i haven't put them on yet, i just got my 17x7 40 offset w/ 215/45/17 and love the way the sidewall looks. 215/45 iirc is the closest to stock size overall. IF i did the 225 it would probably be w/ 40 profile. but my streets suck so the 45 makes me feel better. i would not do 225/45. the sidewall will look big. i'd say one or the other. 215/45 or 225/40.

I have not seen any 225/40-17s anywhere, so it would have to be 225/45-17s. I really don't care if the sidewall would look a little bigger, I am really just going for better performance. Are the wheel well liners different for the pre-98s compared to the post-98s? I thought that I heard at one time that they were redesigned. If they were redesigned, would it be beneficial to buy the post-98 liner so that I could run the larger tire size?
