Hi, I orginally had a squealing noise in the passengers side of the engine and thought it was the belt. I used belt dressing and most of the noise went away, but not completely. A high pitched noise can be heard, mostly during acceleration, you really don't notice it at idle. Also a much louder noise can be heard on startup and remains for a few moments.

I was in the process of replacing the belt, when I noticed I have about 1/8 to 1/4" play on the power steering pulley. Is this normal play or are the bearings gone? If it is the bearings, can these be replaced or does the whole pump need to be replaced? Can I tackle this myself or should I make an appointment at the dealership?

Thanks.

belt dressing will not cure a belt noise. if the belt is worn, replace it.
look at your belt tensioner - they are bad to lose tension and let the belt squeal.
some lateral play in the p/s pump is normal - around 1/16th inch. the pump souldn't have any radial play that you cen feel with your hand. You might be able to replace the pump yourself - it's not a big job.
