Well, I have fun synthetic oils in my engine since after the break-in period, and never had a problem until now by using the Mobil 1. I have a funny feeling there is an incompatibility between an additive in the Mobil 1 and some of the materials used in the gaskets on the Duratec, seeing as I'm not the only one seeing this. Unfortunately, all the dealerships were closed today for easter, so I couldn't get my hands on an oil pan gasket. Any idea what to expect, in terms of price?

probably just the pan gasket. usually happens after a water pump failure. the engine gets hot enough to melt the seal. do not bother to tighten the pan bolts as it will usually leak worse. just replace the gasket and call it good.

Since were on the subject how much of a job is it to change the Gasket. I have the dampness problem as well. I also use mobil But I had the leak before I started using it so Can't blame the oil at this point the car has 110 k on it.

My 95 LX Duratec has an oil leak which recently started. Its not too bad, but I was curious and took it to the Ford Dealer. They put the car up on the rack, and let me come in and look things over with them (TECH, SUPERVISOR, AND YOUR TRUELY). Oil leak is definitely from the oil pan gasket AND the "front cover" (timing chain cover). No charge for this by the way. There are a number of excellent posts on changing the oil pan gasket - do a search). I ordered a replacement gasket from www.fordpartsonline.com for approx $23.00). I have used Amsoil 5-30 in my engine for the past 5 years. It was always very tight oil-leak wise until the past 4 months. I have to "suck it up" on the timing chain cover leak - even the dealer said it was a serious issue to replace. Good Luck, Jab

Never noticed the "wet look" as DemonSVT referred to until I began to see a few drops of oil on the garage floor. This started about 100K miles.

I chased and chased an oil leak over the last few months. Replaced the oil pan gasket (which helped somewhat, appears there was insufficient RTV at the crankcase parting line). At least I wasn't dripping oil on the street anymore.
Replaced the valve cover gaskets; didn't help at all. But the leak still appeared to be coming out of the top of the front bank. Showed it to Terry Haines, and he pointed out that the Camshaft Position Sensor was probably the cause of the continuing leak. He grabbed a fresh O-ring seal from one he had laying around, and now I don't leak a drop.
Moral of the story: If you appear to be leaking from the front valve cover gasket at the front of the block, check the Cam Position Sensor first. It's TONS easier to R&R than a valve cover gasket.
