Took the car out to Syracuse over the weekend for SU's last home game. No problem with the springs, the front is now a bit more firm so my handling has actual improved. That's a good thing.
I go about 60 miles (Keane, NH) and the CEL comes on. So, I see an autozone and pull in. P0420 and P0430 (Bank 1 and 2 Catalyst below efficiency); time to go back to the dealer and have the cats replaced while still under warranty.
I received the P0420 19,000 miles ago and it has just come back now. No P0430 back then, but it seems both cats are on their way out.

Not sure yet. Just made my appointment today. I won't know until Monday. I just hope I don't get the run-around about the codes.

what about the O2 sensors. If one of the two sensors on each bank wears out and begins giving erroneous signals it would likely give the same code.
Either way the sensors should be covered by the warranty and if the dealer is smart they will test them before jumping to replacement of the catalyst units.

You are correct sir. There is a small chance that the O2 sensors are causing the problems. But, bad O2's have their own specific codes and I am hoping it is a cat issue. The Federal Warranty on Emissions does not cover O2 sensors up to the 80,000 miles; only cats. That would come out of my pocket.
The Ford CD says to check the O2 sensors and to check the exhaust for leaks or for an obstruction. If all above check out, then they change the cats.

true on the O2 sensors...i tried getting the dealer to replace them at the same time as the cats and they refused because they said they werent throwing a code, and through some techicality, they are not covered under the federal warranty.

My 02 sensors are throwing a "run lean" code. I really don't feel like paying that much to get 'em replaced/repaired. Ugh

How much does it usually run just to replace O2 sensors? Is it a DIY project?

The downstream sensors are a piece of cake. You just need an O2 sensor socket. The sensors run between $60 and $70 at Autozone. The upstream sensors are a different story. It looks liket bank 2 is pretty easy, but bank 1 (firewall) looks like a PITA. I may change all four sensors after the dealer (Hopefully) changes the cats.
