Either way the sensors should be covered by the warranty and if the dealer is smart they will test them before jumping to replacement of the catalyst units.
You are correct sir. There is a small chance that the O2 sensors are causing the problems. But, bad O2's have their own specific codes and I am hoping it is a cat issue. The Federal Warranty on Emissions does not cover O2 sensors up to the 80,000 miles; only cats. That would come out of my pocket. 
The Ford CD says to check the O2 sensors and to check the exhaust for leaks or for an obstruction. If all above check out, then they change the cats.
true on the O2 sensors...i tried getting the dealer to replace them at the same time as the cats and they refused because they said they werent throwing a code, and through some techicality, they are not covered under the federal warranty.
