The "clicking" noise is/was probably the spark jumping a gap in either the inside of the wire or inside the boot. Pulling the connector to make it less "deep" (your term), may have seperated the conductor from the metal connector inside the boot or severed the conductor inside the wire covering itself. If you pull one of the front wires off a front plug and lay it on the cylinder head I'll bet it makes the same sound when you start the engine! Using your old wire ok almost proves you messed up the new one. Running for any length of time like that might have fouled you new plug too.
