I'm going to make myself look really old now, but when I grew up we used Neats Foot Oil to soften our baseball gloves. The stuff works great, gets a bit messy, and will probably stain anything lighter than a dark grey or blue. I think its still available at hardware stores. WARNING-May get odd looks and whispers behind your back if you ask for it by name.
