Hard to argue with your detailed empirical/a$$ometer observations but Firestone suggests following vehicle mfr's recommendations and explains reason for front/rear differential pressure. Not sure why the Contour didn't make the list along with Porsche, Corvette and BMW.

tire inflation pressure

Thanks for the info Horseydug

This is my priorities the majority of my driving.

With all tight curves in the roads in our area, 31psi. in the Frts., I'd get 15k-20k if I was lucky. This is not overly spirited type driving either. Understeer is terrible at 31 psi. 35-36 frt. & 32 rear gives the best balance and around bang for buck. It just makes no sense, saftey in mind, to run 31 psi with 65% weight up frt. and 34 psi 35% in the rear and the with the uni-body/strut set-up.
This was, what many articles I read, that caused Ford Explorer tires so much grief, especially Firestone's contruction methods. Too low of cold pressure inflation specs. 30psi and 26 psi.???????? "keeping the car buyers happy in a truck chassis"
Around this area dozens of Explore/truck owners I know never had abit of trouble. The folks I asked all run 35 psi min., most opt'd for "Extra load range" Firestones. The Ford dealer that I and my family have dealt with since the 50's, deals heavy with trucks (farming area) and this was not an issue. I'm assuming always running 35psi. as a minium and the dealer never offered anything less the "Extra load range" may have had allot to do with it? Of course running car tire on a truck was never heard of.
My dad's Ole 93 E-150 still has two orignal Firestones (Extra Load Range) on it.(50K on the odometer) Last fall I drove it fully+ loaded 500 miles Ohio to Rockford, Il. 40 PSI out and 38 psi back. And we made it back and and the Ole 300 six managed 21.6mpg on the leg out and about the same back empty. Freeing up the front rust prone calipers got me 3-5 mpg better.
Driving method "egg between foot and accelerator"
I'll shut up now before you fall asleep.
But this is one of my concerns tire pressure and I'm always
tinkering looking for new info/studies. Growing up around SCCA friends didn't hurt.
Like I always tell all my SUV friends "4w drive" or not the proper tire still is very important and then there were a few non-technical types at the phone company that thought All season tires would go anywhere?????????

Oh Oh jeeze, zip it.!!!!!!!!!!

Almost dozed off, but Rockford caught my eye, as I have a cousin there and last visited in Oct/01 to attend her wedding. No eggs in my '98 on the trip.

As they would say in our Parliament 'the honorable member's opinions have now been read into Hansard'.

p.s. Our Hansard = your Congressional Record
