Has anyone else observed this?
I was involved with a DMD installation today on a 98 SE. When the original pulley was removed, we compared it to the new one and observed that the pulley itself (not the added damper part) stands out from the timing cover a little bit more than the original. Laying both pulleys on a flat work bench with the snout end down (the portion that extends into the front seal on the engine) revealed that the DMD was roughly 1/2 of a belt groove further away from the timing cover.
We completed the installation anyway for two reasons. First, many others have made the change with no report of ill effects. Second, the distance to the next pulley on each side seemed distant enough as to allow enough lateral belt flex to keep there from being any belt alignment issues such as edge wear or throwing belts.
It makes me wonder if it would be a good idea to shorten the snout slightly to match the original pulley.
Also, I had our parts department cross reference the engineering number on the DMD and they came up with a part number. It looks like it may be available as part that can be ordered from any Ford dealer in the US. I will try to follow up on this some more. Perhaps someone can mention this to Bill Jenkins for further research. The part number they came up with had an MSRP of about $70.00.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I can compare the two and take pictures once I get it, since my stock pulley is sitting around.
Since you're the first one to notice it, I don't forsee it being a problem unless the belt wears down or skips.
$70 huh? Since Tim Grimes is selling it for $85, I figured it was gonna be pretty inexpensive, but on the other hand I know I'm getting the right thing, and hey, it's only $85 after all.

IIRC The belt seemed to line up on mine but then again I did it over 13 months ago.
However that's a lot of time for the belt to generate a failure too and I live in the high rpms.
Makes me want to go look at it and see...

Dude forget it, I know what you're thinking. You can't stroll into your local Ford dealership and order it. It's a Euro only part.

And what about going to your local Mazda dealer and getting one there? Is the unit identical to the Mazda 6's?

Maybe it used to be Euro only, but who knows now. No harm in checking right? I've already heard rumors that you can get them from forpartsonline.

Ok guys i called around and was asking questions today but still unsure its the crankshaft dampener right? i called my ford dealer today and got quoted $60.22 for a dampener but the guy said its the one that came stock on my car. I also called mazda and asked about the one on the new 6 and he quoted me $62.10, think i will be waisting my time by going there and looking at the 6's? what should i look for?
