Ahhh... the pre-98 clock...

My solution was very elegant. I pulled the bulb out of the plastic base, clipped the bulb wires off and put the metal bits back on the base. I then fashioned up a 5mm LED with resistor attached into the base. It acts just like before when the bulb was in there. I'll post a pic when I get home. You obviously have to pay attention to polarity!

The real trick is getting the lighting completely even -- if you don't do something about it, each of the clock digits are unevenly lit. Cutting the tip off of the LED helps, but doesn't cure it completely. I glued a piece of paper on the end of the LED and voila! Completely perfect even light from each digit on the clock.

For my other lights on the dash, the trick to making the lighting even was gluing a piece of wax paper on the end. It is amazing how well it works!
