The window was making a grinding type noise for about a week, but working. Today it stuck in the down position of course--it's been raining for a week and forecasted for another 4 days! The other windows all work from the master switch and it makes a noise if I try to use it, but nothing happens. I tried to search, but found nothing exactly like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Well, it sounds like it came off the track. I'd recommend finding some shelter, and taking off the door panel and taking a look.

The door panel is a little tricky to remove, there are screws in the handles, all around the edges, and on the vent by the mirror.

I hope this helps!

Well, unfortunately I just went through this and my window has been stuck down for two weeks. I replaced the master window switch and that solved the problem with the other window that was hesitating going up and down, it did not however cure the downed window. I am currently gutting the regulator and replacing. Not cheap. $170 for the whole assembly from Ford. The motor iteself is almost as expensive as the whole assembly so that is why I am replacing evertyhing. It is not too hard to replace. Door panel must come off....unbolt the regulator....push out the clips at the bottom of the window/regulator. Taking the foam insulatoion off the door panel was not fun. Use a razor blade if you have one. Remember there are screws under the door handle. Take the cap off to find.

With a stuck window down, Ford has really got you over the barrel. My car is a '98. With that low of years, I can't understand a window going bad that is barely used.

Ford=crap.
SVT=expensive crap.

Unless Ford hands me a new 2000 spec tranny, I will always think that way. I've already steered one brand new Ford sales buyer elsewhere. I will never own one again. Ford doesn't stand by it's product.

To think, $5000 dollars profit on a new Explorer. Long term, Ford will lose market share. Steered me bad.

A toyota Celica might look like a chics car but at least I know it IT'S GONNA LAST!

svt, NOT FAST ENOUGH TO PAST THE NEAREST REPAIR STATION.

I am mechanically inclined but until I own the car, I can't afford to risk doing my own repairs and rebuilding the engine or removing the tranny.

I had the same problem on my car for months. I thought that something had fallen down into the window assembly and was grinding as the window went up and down. I was wrong! I found out that the window regulator was shot.

A grinding noise usually means that either the plastic wheel that the window regulator cable runs on (at the top of the door) has disintegrated, and/or the plastic channel where the cable enters the window regulator engine has disintegrated. If either of these has happened, then you will need to replace the window regulator.

Check here for more info.

FYI: You can get the window regulator cheaper online. I got one for about $130.
