Well I have been threating myself and my Mystique with taking mine off...So today I finally did it!
It turned out way better then I expected!! No strip, which I do have a '98.
Some things that I think not too many have mentioned before... I used a plastic puddy knife. Actually it is a paddle sort of thing. Anyway, it was really soft and cut through the foam easily without scratching the paint at all. All I had to do was insert the knife edge of the paddle in the lead edge of the ding gaurd, grasp each side of the paddle and slowly pull it to the oppisite end. To remove the excess foam and adhesive, all I had to do was run the knife edge of the padel in a downward motion while holding the edge at a 45 degree angle. Small short strokes and it just peeled right off! To get the residue and dirt line off - I first tried 100% Isopropyl Alcohol on a small area, then just the clay bar on another small area. Neither worked great alone, but the clay bar did work a bit better. I found that it was easy as silk to get off by first laying down a nice application of the alcohol, wipe off the excess and then apply the clay bar and it was just like claying the car. Whatever was left just lifted right off. Then after a nice buffing, I polished and waxed the area using my buffer. Of course I washed the area right after removal of the ding guard.
All and all, it took about 1 hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes. Like I said, it looks way better then I thought it would! I really thought that it would just be one of those things that you would not really notice, but WoW!! When it is your own car it makes a world of difference in the apperence.
