how much is there to be gained taking out the acordian tube and putting in some 3" pipe. Would buying a CTA or whatever's tube be any better?

Not much if any. It's an aesthetic mod more than anything. It does smooth airflow.

But it retains much more heat than the stock accordian tube.
I experienced this at the 02 American Iron Shootout with the BAT pipe which stayed really hot vs people who had the stock accordian tube which cooled much faster.

Well the CTA pipe will definately be easier, especially if you dont have a welder on hand. Gains on the other hand woudl be minimal to none. Possibly 1hp at most. Its mainly for looks.

It may show gains with a 60mm TB. The inner pleats of the stock boot are smaller then 60mm. Also the repetetive ridges are not good for airflow.

I could not tell any power gains personally (big surprise ), but the throttle response did get a bit crisper.

Yes it suffers from heat soak more than the rubber one does, but with some coating it's does alright. Getting rid of the stock boot alone is worth it IMO.
