Next time, put the car in neutral when coming to a stop. If the car idles fine, it may still be transmission related. The car may still upshift fine, that would be totally unrelated.

As for bypassing the AC, there's a belt listed for it right on the under hood area on the car!!! eek Quick, find a better mechanic!
