I have a 98.5 E1 and the airbag light frequently flashes 5, pause, 5, etc. I took it to the dealer but they said that they couldn't read the code to diagnose it unless it was blinking when they went to check it (meaning that the code isn't stored in memmory). Is this correct? And does anyone know what 5, pause, 5 means?

I don't have a listing for an airbag 5-5.
Verify the code.

53 is as high as my Ford manual goes. I just fixed a 45 code on mine this weekend. After powering down, I cleaned up the area where the sensor is clamped to the radiator bracket. After that I found the sensor disconnect between the battery and the headlamp and cleaned it up too. Use electronic parts cleaner. I used some "Gold Ends" PCB treatment (spray) on the pins; keeps oxidization down and lubricates the plug.

mine always blinks too....i never really pay attention to how many times though. I'm really tempted to just put some black tape over the light to fix that problem though smile

Is 20 minutes long enough to wait after disconnecting the battery before messing with air bag stuff? What is Ford recommended time? What is the absolute safest way to work on these w/o having to go to a dealer?
Mike

I just put a new steering wheel on last weekend, so I had to pull the airbag. Ford specifically recommends 20 minutes of power off. Make sure you carry the airbag with the cover facing away from yourself and anyone else. When setting the airbag down, place it with the cover facing up.

Otherwise, its pretty easy to pull. Just 2 Torx screws in the back of the wheel and its out.

I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby.

smile Heh, I have this image in my head of the disconnected airbag firing while the wheel's facedown, and that wheel going up, up, and away...

that would be all to funny to watch your steering wheel float away. Anyway, My air bag light was flashing at one time too. But it was when iwas in a car accident and air bag never came out. Took it to dealer and they said i did not hit hard euongh. I find that hard to believe the whole front of my car was totaled. I flew forwarded. But, Anyway weeks after that air bag light would drive me nuts blinking all the time, dealer said it was reseting it self what do you guys think?
