do the tranny cocktail with synthetic ATF and the second gear crunch will be alot less. I have noticed that doing the cocktail helps especially when cold. For instance

I found that when I did the cocktail to the tranny in my 2000 SVT that it shifts the same (before warming up) when its 20 deg. F. just the same as it did before the cocktail (before warming up) at 70 deg. F

Thanx "J"...

Do you get the 2nd gear crunch too? Or is this a general statement on the overall worth of the "tranny cocktail"?

Thanx man...

I have had an issue with 2nd gear when it is cold outside (<10 F) since the day I bought the car. I just let car idle for about 15 to 30 seconds in neutral with the clutch out, push the clutch in and out a couple of times and it shifts perfect.

When it is about 10 F, I have no problems at all.

Hmmmm...the plot thickens.

I always let the car "settle" into it's normal idle before I put it into gear; usually about 15-30 seconds like you mentioned. I haven't tried pumping the clutch though. I'll give that a try in the morning.

Wake up call!!!!!!!.Think about where the oil is in the trans on a cold start????Think about what gears are turning inside the trans with the clutch depressed???? Now think again about the oil...where does it STAY with the clutch depressed on a cold star...real 'rocket science ' eh guys...!!!

Well, I'm gonna assume that like engine oil, it's at the bottom of the tranny and not up in the "mix" where it needs to be. Past that, I haven't the foggiest idea about what gears are turning in what direction. I'm not a mechanic and I've never been "inside" a transmission. So to me, this is sort of is rocket science. I'm not 100% automotively challenged, but the inner workings of a transmission are what I know the eleast about.

But it's like everything else...it's easy once you know how to do it.

Terry,

Do you think there would be an improvement switching to any of the "new" ATF+4 lubricants and would our transaxles benefit from an "overfill" to "throw" more oil around?

Thanks,

...Ed smile

Ford issued a recall on the MTX-75 trans fluid, I don't know if you have taken it in for that partcular recall, but i would just to be on the safe side of things, because it could affect your synchro's...

mine does this too on 2-3 upshifts. what is even more disconcerting is that on 3-2 downshifts the gear doesn't synch in until the clutch is halfway out... i think its a some kind of "safety" thing gone band, well at least i hope it is. to try and combat this i have been double clutching when the engine and tranny are cold, which is good practice for when my synchros go out entirely eek . I do almost entirely city driving, so i use 1-4th gears mostly with a lot of shifting, which i'm sure does wonders to help the problem.

Where did you here about the recall on the trans fluid? I have the same cold morning shift problem, but with a slight pause between first and second has really helped until it warms up.
