just curious how they would match up together. my buddy has the new 1.8 T in the "tiptronic" edition or whatever it's called. It's pretty quick, but we havent raced yet. what does everyone think, also is the jetta 1.8 t offered in 5-speed? If so i would imagine that could probably get a stock CSVT

you realize there Wolfburg or whatever they wanna call is is only 150hp and thats the so called top of the line 1.8l T
I raced a dude when i was in the AF with my SHO and destroied him. off the line it was close but hell my grandmas Aerostar is close to the SHO of the line. Then i was out. and my SVT and SHO where side by side at the end of a quatermile.

I say with a ok not even a good driver the SVT wins!!!

Yeah, the 1.8T is not that strong. The audi 1.8T is better and more of a match. I raced a slightly modded Audi A4 1.8T in 2000 and it out-pulled my SVT every time I ran it. It wasn't embarrassing but it was faster. The guy said he installed a larger turbo but was pretty much stock. This was long before my 3L. Now the Jetta VR6 is a different animal. That puppy is quick. It has less power than a stock CSVT but it should outrun it. When I first finished my 3L back when it was running 194 HP to the wheels I would only pull a carlength on my buddies 2002 VR6 in 1st gear. In second it pulled a little bit more. This was before I had headers on my car and let me tell you those headers made a difference! He wasn't near as close once I put those on.

Actually the new Jetta 1.8 are 180hp. my friend just bought one. But if it is the Wolfburg edition Steada is correct...there only 150hp. But there tourque and hp kicks in at low RPM roughly around 1500 RMPS. My other friend in his 2001 GTI with 180hp....between me and him it comes down to who messes up a shift first. becasue of how low his tourque kicks in, he can keep up. But in 3rd i begine to pull away. Most i can beat him is a car length. sometimes he peat me with a good jump.

If its the 150hp you should take him....if its a new one 2001 and up...it may give you some touble.

The matchup all depends on the model(GTI/Jetta)due to weight differences, the tranny(auto/stick), and of course the driver. The only 1.8t's that came in 150hp trim were the early models...00',01'. The 02'-03's came with 180hp/174ft.lbs..

All 1.8t's can be easily upgraded to the 200hp+ with simple mods such as a chip, exhaust, and a CAI. So, if you run into one at the track with even a hint of mods, be ready to get beat...

My wife and I recently purchased an 03' Jetta wagon Auto/tip. Although it's not the fastest thing on wheels it did manage to pull off solid 15.6-15.7 sec. runs. With the mods in my sig it was able to beat my SVT that was running solid 14.8's....with her driving it!

Like I said they can be made to run hard...imagine what simple mods would do to a 5 spd. GTI!!

i must agree....they are the simplest, but one of the most expensive cars to upgrade. My freind is getting the chip soon for his 5 speed 2002 (sorry i put 2001 in my previous post) GTI. Right now i already have a tough time beating him....i know with the chip he will beat me.

They are not cars to mess with.

oh well.

My buddy has a 2002 VR6 Jetta. I squeezed it by a couple feet. It was a 5-speed. He is not the best driver though...

I can believe that too....because there tourque and hp on the VR6 kick in almost the same time ours do. I think a little sooner.

So it comes down to weight and the drivers. But the 1.8 liters...therer tricky becasue there major power kicks in early and goes up very steady....damn turbos

Chipping an 02' GTI will put it around 215hp/245tq...depending on the octane tune, and will make it a mid to low 14 car easily. In fact there are guys on VWVORTEX that run in the 14's stock.

They are pricey to mod, but I wouldn't say any worse than the Tour...$600 catbacks come to mind.

The Wolfsburg was just a special edition they did. It came with factory BBS wheels among other little add-ons.

The way I look at it is: If it comes from the factory F/I, then you're gonna have fun with it. Shoot, have a look at the new SRT-4...minor upgrades(LSD,exhaust,CAI,tuning)and that car is a threat to C5's for God's sake!!
