Car has stock Ford FM/AM/Cass. 4spkr. Nice unit, dolbyNR,Bass, treble, all that. Now before going overboard here, let me state that I just want louder - I don't need bass that will extend the San Andreas fault to the East coast here - I just want to hear music in my car without having to roll up my windows in summer.

Can anyone recommend a unit that uses my tour's existing power & speaker harnesses? Essentially plug n' play is what I'm after. Something around $200.

Thanks,

-Chris

PS: Until then - has anyone attempted to open the top on their stock stereo deck? I'd like to get in there and do a proper head cleaning - those cleaner cassettes are crud.

any aftermarket will be better, so do yourself a favor and get rid of that. as far as inexpensive aftermarket goes, i always liked the lower model pioneers, also some jvcs are decent, or if you can pick up an alpine for under 200 id go for that

good luck!

The only way to get better is with an aftermarket HU. It is the single most significant improvement in sound quality and level to the Contiques. Most Best Buy/Circuit City type of stores offer free installation for you and decent prices on decent equipment.

Now, you could also try just a 4-channel amp, but that will not be plug and play.

MY Bad! I neglected to mention that the placement of the speakers the way they are in the doors doesn't help. Makes me wish my ears were near my knees.

IE: I lazyboned it over to the ATM one day(left Contour running, door wide open) and noticed something: I could hear everything Imus in the morning was saying, this being off a busy street with traffic zooming by, and he's on AM with NO treble, and the car is 40 feet from me in the lot. Those speakers ARE loud - but where they are firing at (your boots and the footwells) doesn't help!

So I guess the extra watts of a new HU are the solution. Thx!

Jensen power baby!! j/p if u got $200 to spend I wouldn't get that

although I wouldn't go as far as saying the speakers are loud because when u have the car running they suck...some nice 5x7 speakers would do u good(and me too)
