There is a recall for all under hood wiring harnesses. I know it covered the early models, not sure about the 98+. Click here and enter your vin # under the approiate make to find out all the recalls on you car.

Doesn't show any recalls for mine, and I know I've still got the blower switch and the wiring harness (which I think were "service campaigns", not recalls?). I've got 125,000 miles now so I wonder if there's any chance of Ford paying for some of it...

Great--now the black 12-position connector on the engine wiring harness is falling apart. I disconnected it to put some connector grease on the terminals, and I noticed last night that it wasn't latching when I put it back together.
So I went out to buy some wire tie-wraps to hold it together and when I pulled it apart, the plastic insert in the female end came out! And now it won't stay in!
Normally this would be a minor problem since I could just get the Ford part number off the connector sleeve and get a replacement for a few bucks, pop the wires/terminals out and put them in the new connector sleeve, but.....
...There's NO FORD PART NUMBER ON IT!!! ARRGGHHH!!!
There IS an AMP part number on it, but I think the chances of a Ford dealer being able to cross that to a Ford part number are slim.

I just replaced the wiring harness in my son's 95 Mystique. The harness was $390. It only took me an hour to replace the whole thing, but the transmission and engine cradle was out, and the car was on a lift. The old harness was ugly. Naked wires EVERYWHERE. That's what burned up the tranny.
BTW: the car has 130k miles dealer wouldn't even consider any compensation.

Is this same problem also found on the four cylinder models? I have noticed power fluctuation throughout my car, ex: all my lights flicker whenever i take my foot off the gas. I only have 60,000 on my 95 Mystique, if this is the problem maybe I can get the dealer to cover the cost of replacing it. Could you tell the symptoms of a brunt wiring harness?

I was thinking, as an alternative to a new harness...a local electronics supply store sells heat-shrink tubing in 4-foot lengths in various diameters...pop the terminals out of the sleeves, slip the heat-shrink tubing over the wire and shrink it.

Pulled the intake manifold off today, yep, the wires are cracking...only some are, and they're all the same color.
I think the shrink-wrap tubing is a viable repair option....

I don't know, but the only place the wiring harness is cracking on my '95 is under the intake manifold.
Just in case anyone thinks this problem is limited to Ford:

Older (early 80s Volvos) are affected too.
