Why would you want to ignore the beauty that is the 3.0L Duratec? I can't think of many other impressive engines in this class, and they probably won't fit between the strut towers. It's very cramped in there.

If you're thinking V8, forget it, won't fit.
Four cylinder? Why?
Some other V6 or an I6? Show me one that is better than the Duratec that won't cost you 2X the value of your car to figure out how to put in. You have to think about fabricating the motor mounts, wiring it, installing the engine computer, figuring out ignition/starting, mating it to a transaxle, building proper length CV shafts, etc. A huge undertaking. And not worth it, IMHO.
