Well, this is my hobby and I have a certain sense of aesthetics I am trying to realize with this car?and anyway, I am doing this entirely for fun! Logic and fiscal frugality is not really a factor.

I have been a practicing car nut for over 25 years (mostly 60s Fords) and I have seen the most outrageous expenditures in pursuit of horsepower (and have been guilty of some of it myself!). Dropping $5000 or more on an FE long-block is a common thing and it??s never logical (the power levels are also mind-numbing compared to what we see in even highly modded 2.5Ls).

Compared to my usual auto interests, the Contour is a real change of pace. The ease of modifying this car combined with the low cost and ready availability of parts is a delight! Just try working with Ford FE big blocks from the 60s.

Even if the money were an issue with me this swap is probably a good use of hobby dollars. With my very low restriction exhaust I suspect that changing from stock LX components to SVT manifolds and TB will really improve the overall drivability of the car ?? and I certainly expect more than 5 HP. The ST200 or 2000SVT UIM (same thing) provides 5 HP on stock 98 SVT contours that have relatively free flowing intakes and exhausts to start with. Swapping out the restrictive LX components should be even more effective.

As a young man I was an extremely frugal bastard, worked hard, put myself through college, planned for the future. The years have passed and frugality is now something I advise but do not necessarily practice in all things?.

I understand... I didn't mean for you to take it personally, I really didn't. I mean, look at my Mustang... I don't even want to get into how much money I have dropped (oh my god) and hours spent, sweat, blood, everything on that car... Contour's are rather limited to the things you can do to them in my book, but given what is available, it is a good choice and to be honest, it sounds like a project that I would probibly end up doing if it weren't for my other passion in cars. Anyway, more power to ya'... just used to 'more bang for the buck' with the stang' I guess, that's all...

I did stuff right off of the bat with my "daily driver" tour'... it isn't my toy, but my daily driver and I immediately put SVT exhaust, shifter, K&N, and yanked the silencer... next I did the throttle hang fix, fog light wire job, and now I pinned my secondaries... funny how when you are a car nut it really doesn't matter what you drive, you end up getting into it. The stereo alone in that car is more than 4 times the little performance I have done... go figure...

If I can't come up with a set of those there is a local high performance machine shop that will cut new butterflies to spec.
To me that seems easier to do than to start swapping fuel rails, injectors, linkages, and such. Just R&R it for the old one and away you go...

I think even just optimizing the 95 lower (flatten the bars, shorten the screws, swap from button head to countersunk screws) would make a nice difference. Especialy since I've already removed all other intake and exhaust restrictions for the most part.
I think I'm going to try that first and dyno then see where I'm at before going bigger.

You know, I think you're right... I don't know what gave me that impression! I think I might have read that from somewhere a while back and it stuck, but I just looked at pics I took when I took the LIM off and it does look straight through.

Well, I guess I'll look into getting a spare LIM to play with.

Hi MystiqueSVT! Did you get your traction-control to work OK with your SVT TB?

Yes...my traction control is fully functional!!!

I'll fill everyone in when I start on the 2000 SVT LIM conversion.

I getting ready to install a set of 99 SVT UIM and LIM on my 96. Got them from the classifieds for 200 for both. It only cost me 40 for shipping. I think I made out pretty good. The previous owner had them on his 97 so I know it will work. I'm also installing 19lb injectors with the LIM at the same time.

So you??re the guy that got those manifolds! I saw them in the classifieds but was (clearly) too late. I knew the minute I sucked it up and paid full price for an ST200 UIM that I would find countless incredible deals on the same hardware! Oh well, congrats and I hope your install goes cleanly. Nice thing about manifolds is that while you can break them, they don't normally wear out. TH also has some used manifolds that he may make available this summer, but I decided not to wait.

Alex, great pictures!

Your idea for optimizing the secondaries ??flatten the bars, shorten the screws, swap from button head to countersunk screws? will make a nice improvement in airflow. We can all see the restriction the butterfly plate screws make.

But hey, why not go for broke! Bore it out to the 34/35mm 2000 SVT diameter AND optimize the larger butterflies. If you wouldn??t mind doing two of them this way, I have some bucks I can contribute to such an experiment!

I honestly think this could make for a semi-popular Dtec Tuning specialty service for owners of 95 Contours and Mystiques. I??ll bet there are plenty of these running around with SVT UIMs and stock LIMs. Did Mondeos use this same vacuum secondary manifold design back then?
