Check the following:
- evaporative emissions hose (short (about 3-4 inches long) elbow-shaped rubber hose) that connects to the PCV valve.
- evaporative emissions tube (long (about 2-3 feet long) plastic ribbed tube) that connects to the afore-mentioned evaporative emissions hose and runs along the back of the engine firewall. Be careful when you check this tube since it is brittle and cracks very easily.
I had a rip in my evaporative emissions hose, which led to a gaseous smell every so often.
If its not this, then it could be your catalytic converter is bad.
