My auto trans seems to be hesitating to shift into 2nd. Overdrive seems to be kicking in at low rpm. I recently flushed transmission, but did not change trans filter as the Ford service manager told me they never do it. If I am not mistaken, I think we paid them to do this at one time to keep warranty valid. anyway I like the car and problems have been minimal. My last ford was an 89 SHO which my parents bought new, so I always question Fords service dept as they could barely change the oil on that car

My '95 GL's transmission went berserk about 4 months ago. It was the "nuetral safety swirct" or the modern named equivelent. In my case it would downshift like crazy after it warmed-up a bit.
The "switch" tells the computer what gear the engine is in at any given moment. It is located on top of the transmission slightly below and to the left of the ignition module (distributor thing.)
It could be your problem as well. IT DID NOT SHOW UP ON THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AT FIRST. I learned about it on this forum and after insisting that the shop check again the computer showed the switch as being "out of range."
Good luck!
Hey, how's Big Sprang these days? I used to play in a rock band at a club that was located out on the old Air Force base. This was back in 1982/83. Some guy rented the old officers club and turned it into a rock-n-roll bar.
I live just east of Dallas in Rockwall.

MY tranny went out at 40K miles. It would not want to shift and would stall out at high speeds and then kick hard back into gear.
Finally the axle broke and blew the tranny.
$1,600 later I was driving. I'm at 80k now and today I just replaced a wheel bearing.
I expect next my water pump will blow.
These cars suck!
By a Japanese car next.
Ford makes crap!

Maybe I'm lucky, but my Contour has 166K on it and so far other than the top radiator hose, brake pads and shoes, the AC system and the switch on the tranny IT'S ALL ORIGINAL! It has also been creamed on the driver's side HARD three times! The local body shop made some bucks off of this car! The three repairs added up cost $12K and the car only cost $14K!!!!!
Hey, yeah... that club was called BOGARTS! We used to make a circuit that included Amarillo, Midland and Big Spring. We were rockin' west Texas weren't we? Big Springs was a one-nighter at first. WE were livin' large and stayed at the Motel 6 up on the interstate! I recall getting in trouble with the only USAF security gaurd out there because I took a 2 x 4 from a demolished barracks building! He saw me get it and made me put it back! That base had been closed at least fifteen years and here I was STEALING a damn 2 x 4! SUCH A THIEF I WAS! I bet I was the highlight of his day! I wonder who he pissed-off to be assigned that job? Talk about the Maytag repairman!

Get it scanned for codes. Could be the speed sensor.

Might try re-seating the electrical connector going to the tranny and/or resetting the computer. (Disconnect the battery for a few minutes.) Hopefully your dealer was smart enough to use Mercon fluid instead of Type-F. Might want to check the fluid level just to be sure it's correct. My owners manual says to use 6 quarts of ATX fluid, but it only takes 4! Mine is still shifting smooth and strong at 111K miles. (Valvoline synthetic )

Hah...Redhawk thanks for letting me know that maybe me or my maintenence sucks!
Look..my brother has a 95 Contour...Bought his a couple of months after me. He has a 5 speed I have an Auto Mystique LS..both are 6 cyl.
His water pump blew out while he was sitting at a light..just like many other here have had happen.
Many Automatic tranny drivers here have had the same problem as me as well as broken front stabilizers, range finders (tranny), broken springs, bad EGR sensors, and cars with multiple unforseen codes.
I have never had a car with so many problems.
So ya...these cars suck.
Thanks for your comments.

Then sell it or suck it up sally. Cry me a river you big baby.
I make no apologies- you're ignorant coming on an "Enthusiasts' site" and bashing the car.
If you think my post was bad go to clubsi and state that the SI is over-hyped junk and see what flattering comments you get.
What did you expect? And if your car was such junk that you bought, why did your brother buy one?
