Have you tried adding friction modifier to the trans oil yet? Try it before you get lost on other ideas. Even if it doesn't completely solve your problem, the overall shift quality is greatly improved and well worth the effort.

Can I just add the friction modifier without flushing? I assume only 2oz is needed?

Yes you can add the friction modifier without flushing the trans. Yes, you only need 2 oz, or half a bottle.

If the trans fluid is old, it would be a good idea to use the friction modifier with a fluid change. If the fluid is still in good shape, you don't need to change it.

Yeah, I agree that the true source hasn't been found yet. Ford put a new tranny in my car and it made ZERO difference. I put the cocktail in, and it made a huge difference, but once in a while i still can't get into gear, ANY gear. Running the engine with tranny in nuetral does nothing to help. Seems more like the shift gate really gets misaligned or something (but what do i know? if I did I'd get it fixed!).
