Hello - 1st time post, frequent reader though... I know this has been mentioned time after time but my 99 duratech is pulling the famous "moose" call - I can't stand anyone ( including dealer ) really working on my car so I'd rather do this my self. I have removed the air box, inlet pipe, sensors, MAF and the IAC hose running from the IAC valve. My question is whats the easiest way to remove the IAC valve ; seems to be in a akward loca'l snug agaist the firewall. Any sug.s? Any help would be great & FYI not a SVT -

Use a 1/4" drive and the smallest ratchet you can find, remove the rubber liner on the cowl above the firewall, and find someone with little girly hands to get in there. I got mine off that way (I have little girly hands). Just use the socket to break the screws free, then take them off by hand. Try disconnecting the vacuum lines from the Upper Intake and from the EGR to gain clearance to the screws.
The other option is to pull the Upper Intake Manifold. Not too terribly difficult, but you are adding about 90 - 120 minutes to the job (off and back on again).

Right ON thanks~! ...with removing the upper intake, is there any gaskets to contend with? I'l probably do that & some clean'n at same time.

TB gasket and EGR gasket are both what I call "meltable" style. Can be re-used but are so cheap that they should be replaced. EGR especially likes to stick and tear when the EGR is disconnected from the UIM. IAC "gasket" is a little piece of stiff paper and costs like $1. UIM gaskets (you need 2, about $10 per give or take) are "reuseable" per Ford but should be replaced while you have it off. Those are the only ones you will run into unless you pull the lower (and that's a much bigger job since the fuel rail has to come out, too).

You did all of that to try to kill the moose? All I did was do the TH fix(1/2" copper pipe cap with 5/64" hole into hose as shown in the How To). It has been a distant memory ever since. My neighbors in my apartment complex were about to kill me for waking them up in the morning, so I had to!

You can clean the IAC without removing it. Cleaning often is enough to solve the problem. Also the throttle hang cure often gets rid of the moose.

I do it with the engine running. Remove the hose on the side of the IAC and spray into the IAC with throttle body cleaner. Also when you clean the throttle body, some of that cleaner ends up in the IAC where it helps too.
