Yes, the caliper bracket needs to come of to get the rotor off. From memory I think the Torx bit needs to be a T40 or T45, it's big. And hopefully you can break yours free without an impact gun!
I just did my brakes and I used a T47 which work fine for me, Also a braker bar. The whole set of 10 Star sockets cost me 14.00 at a local carparts store and if your worried about em braking most quality tools today have a lifetime return policy.
