Hello,
I have a '96 GL contour. I just recently been having brake light problems. Are you ready for this one. All the fuses are good, replaced a new stop switch, bulbs and no lights, but my turn signals work, flashers etc. The only brake light that works is the upper one. I've talked to the ford dealer and they dont have a clue.
If I am missing something that I should check let me know. Thanks for your help.

If you step on the brake and the center/upper light works, your brake switch and fuses are OK. If you are saying that you replaced the bulbs, maybe the wrong bulbs were put it. The brake bulb is a dual element bulb. (#1157 IIRC) I could check my wiring diagrams if you don't get it corrected and still need help with this later.

I did check the bulbs and they are the correct ones. I am just thinking that the brake lites must be hooked up to someother fuse, like maybe the flasher switch or the turn signal, is just a guess. But, if you have a wire diagram that would help a great deal.

May be your turn signal switch. When you signal, you disconnect that side light bulb and connect it to flashers. When you center the turn signal arm, it reconnects the bulb to the brake light circuit. So maybe it is not reconnecting.

If you find a clue as to what is causing your brake lights not to function as you stated, post it cause I too just noticed I am having the same problem. My center light behind the rear seat is working as you mentioned. Turn signal light is working too. Regular rear lights are also working. This is very strange.

I think Richard has a pretty good idea here. After looking at my light cluster and the wiring diagrams, the turn signal switch looks like a likely cause given the symptoms you have.

Do your reverse/backuplights work? I had the same problem but my reverse light didnt work, but this time the Ford dealership found out the problem and fixed it for a low price. The problem was crimped wires in the trunk area. So check the wiring of the lights.
And yes my turn signals did work, but had no brakelights or no reverse lights.
