arent the intakes CARB certified...for EMISSIONS purposes for use in cali and elsewhere...dont the manf have to test these things before they can sell them to the public?..contact your manf and see what they say..they will probably laugh like hell and ask you if your arse hurts...and a matter of fact, if our intake system is screwed up the little least...our cars WILL NOT RUN for sh!t..and for the cat...a cat is cat is a cat..go to a muffler shop and for 150 bucks or so and have them slap a high flow model on there and say F%^$ ford....a little more cooler, free flowing air isnt gonna hurt nothing anyway...

that is complete [censored]...they do have to prove that the intake caused the problem with the cat. That is the law, and last time I checked FORD was not the law.

Dang... Too bad you got FoMoCo "customer service" involved before you tried going to somewhere else with your stock airbox.

I doubt a dealership would have put anything down that would have showed up. The FoMoCo call center people have most likely flagged your account now so it will show up at all dealers what has happened.

Some times you have to try to get this crap done while flying under the radar first.

If you ever do call the "service center" never admit to anything. They try to get you to talk yourself into saying that it was your fault basically. Then they mark this all in your file and your really screwed then.

No, Ford isn't the law but their little flat rate guide is and the dealer probably already spent more time diagnosing the problem than Ford will pay them to do any more with it, since this would be a warranty claim.

Dunno how technical you want to get, but I have read that some aftermarket cone filters can cause stock electronics to act screwy. This could cause some unburnt gas (due to rich condition) from detonating in the exhaust manifold. It could damage the cat. Is this happening? Probably not. Read up on the Manguson-Moss stuff.

Thought I might ask you now for some preventative advice, if you have the time.
I have a 1999 contour se 118, 600 miles.
I got it from a dealer who got it from a rental company. It seems that the engine is in great shape. The body certainly is. I have changed all 4 tires, back brakes, pcv valve and hose, o2 sensor(after a po133 cel), changed oil every 2000 miles and filter, changed trans. fluid, air filter, cabin air filter....all fluids good.
I am thinking of changing plugs and wires, and fuel filter, as well as checking belts.....anything else you can think of??
There is some oily mixture in the air filter, and I was told that this is because the high mileage, but I could change the pcv valve and hose..however, it may be that the engine is starting to age. Of course, I want to do everything I can to maintain this vehicle. Hopefully, the rental company took care of it. Any comments?..I just fixed the pcv valve 2 days ago...will this affect the amount of oil I see under the air filter? What else can I do to keep this machine ??
I appreciate your knowledge.
