Hey All,

Just wondering if anyone knew the proper discard thickness of front stock rotors. I have a 99 2.5L SE. I went to get them cut at a machine shop and they told me they were too thin. Didn't ask the measurment he got, but I think he may be wrong because they have never been cut before. On other vehicles I have always cut the rotors at least once. Am I wrong? I have a caliper so I would like to see if he is correct or not.

Thanks.

Should be stamped on rotor. Refinishing thickness obviously greater to allow for wear.

Thanks. I should have thought of that. Looks like I need to get out a toothbrush and do some exploring.

IIRC, it was about 22 mm for my 95 Mystique. Of course, I may not be recalling correctly. I believe that works out to be about 0.87 inches, or something like that. I can check in my manual tonight, if you don't get the information before then.

It is not uncommon on Contours to need rotors with the first brake job. It was real common on the 95 and 96 models, but Ford changed the materials and generally speaking they lasted longer on later models, but not always.

The discard thickness is cast into the outside hub face of the rotor. You may need to use a wire brush to clear away the rust to read it.
