Even though Detroit winters can be considered mild, go with an all-season or winter tire on a second set of rims. Easiest and most cost effective way to go -

The big thing with summer tires like Kumho's 712s and MXs, BFG KDW's, Falken Azenis, etc, etc is that they are SUMMER tires - the tread pattern/depth doesn't do anything for removing snow/slush, the large blocks of tread make it even slicker on ice, and the compound was designed for warmer weather. Summer tires are really only good until about 50 degrees, around which point performance deminishes greatly.

Best thing to do is find some really cool 17/18/19 inch wheels, put some nice summer tires on those and then put winter/all season tires on your 16's. Then you get the cool wheels for 9 months and the 'point A to point B' wheel for 3.
